Tomato – Ailsa Craig

Ailsa Craig is a medium/cherry tomato with a good, slightly acidic taste. The  indeterminate, regular-leafed plant crops well with clusters of 6-8 mostly round fruits (although some are slightly elongated). An excellent all purpose tomato which can be grown indoors or outdoors. Its been grown for over 60 years which shows its consistent value.

Ailsa Craig competes for space with others such as Moneymaker, Matina, Bloody Butcher and Alicante. It holds its own but should be grown with the alternatives in mind.

We grow this cultivar most years, cycling it with the other similar varieties. For a number of years we have been growing this at the allotment as part of our "blight resistance" trials. However, it seems to be one of the more susceptible varieties and develops late blight quite early and the plants quickly succumb.

Historically, it was introduced in the UK in 1912 bred in the UK as a cross between Fillbasket and Sunrise as a commercial greenhouse tomato.
