Tomato Big Beef (aka Jack Hawkins)

A Pink/Red large beefsteak dehybridised variety Regular Leafed Indeterminate.

Description

We came across Jack Hawkins tomato as the winner of the Tomato Growers Association 7th Tastiest Tomato Competition. So we had to try it, just to see if it is as good as they suggest. After searching for Jack Hawkins tomatoes across the internet, we eventually resorted to asking Wight Salad Group directly and they pointed us at “Big Beef” as an alternative name.

This is a popular tomato in the USA and we found a number of F1 Hybrid versions (which we didn’t want to grow) and eventually found an open pollenated variety at Tomatofest.

This is described by Tomatofest as: “a de-hybridised version of  an American favourite. The large, juicy, fruits combine old-fashioned beefsteak flavour with heavy yields. 1-pound, round to globe-shaped. Flavour is full and hearty with lots of sweet juice balanced with that wonderful tomato acidity. These giants slice up perfectly for big sandwiches. Fruit stays large even at the end of a long harvest season.”

As a red beefsteak tomato, they obviously are in competition with a number of others and will have to work hard to be tastier than Mortgage Lifter or Pink Brandywine. None the less, they’re worth a try.
