Tomato Black Krim (Czerno Krimski)

Description

Black Krim is an outstanding beefsteak tomato with an intense, slightly salty taste. It is easy to grow but does require relative high temperatures to set fruit (probably less suitable for outdoor growing in the UK but they set easily in greenhouses). An indeterminate plant, the heavy trusses of fruit are relatively well spaced but may need to be supported as they ripen. Black Krim originates from the Crimea where it pre-dates the Russian revolution (1917). The slightly flattened Dark Red/Mahogany fruits are about 4 inch diameter and 6 to 14 ounces with lots of meaty flesh making it good for sandwiches and cooking. The green gel around the seeds gives this tomato a somewhat unusual appearance when sliced but is an excellent talking point.

The high temperatures needed to set fruit mean that Black Krim is prone to Catfacing and it can split around the faults in the fruit. However, this doesn’t affect the taste, it ripens well and is a tomato we make space for.
