Tomato Darby Striped

Medium Sized Red and Yellow striped tomato with a rich flavour.

Description

Grown for the first time in 2018 with seeds from a seed swap, we were interested to see how this grew. We were very pleased.

A early/mid season red/yellow striped tomato with deep red flesh and a beautiful flavour which made us want to find out more.

It turns out that it is a non-commercially released tomato bred in the 1960's by Dr Lewis Darby of the Glasshouse Crops Research Institute in Littlehampton. Dr Darby is better known for breeding Tigerella but in our opinion, this has a richer flavour and compares well with Red Zebra (although its not quite as large). The stripes are not as distinct as either of these and I guess that's why it wasn't commercially released.

It is thin skinned and therefore prone to splitting if overwatered (which we did) but certainly a variety that we will maintain on our list of "good to grow".
