Green, cherry open pollinated tomatoes on compact indeterminate plants.
Green Grapes (also known as Green Grape) is a green cherry tomato with a sweet-tart flavour. The mid-ripening, short indeterminate, regular-leafed, plant has long trusses of 8-14 well spaced slightly oblong green cherry tomatoes. Our experience in growing this tomato is that it can be trained to a cordon but doesn’t grow very tall (under 5ft) and the crop is increased if you allow a number of vines to develop. However, we don’t think that it is a Determinate variety, perhaps a semi-determinate (or compact-indeterminate) cultivar. The fruit turn yellowish green when ripe with a very nice flavour, juicy and sweet when fully ripe. They do not appear to go overripe before they fall from the plant so that’s helpful because the fruit still taste excellent.
It was developed by Tom Wagner and released in the late 1970s as a cross between a number of Heritage varieties including Evergreen.
We prefer these to Emerald Green Cherry having tried both a number of times.
